Crete is an island just off the coast of Greece in the Mediterranean Sea. It is 156 miles long and 35 miles wide. In the First Century it had a reputation for being a dangerous place. One author said that there were three evil C’s in the ancient world: Cilicia, Cappadocia, and Crete. Another author named Polybius said, “The Cretans, on account of their innate greed, live in a constant state of war with each other and you will hardly find anywhere a people more deceitful than them.”
Yet this is where the Lord started a church. This is where He planted a body of believers. Titus 1:5 says, “For this reason I left you in Crete, that you would set in order what remains and appoint elders in every city.” This means that there is hope for the rest of us. If God could start a church in Crete, He could start one anywhere. If He could turn these people around, He could turn people around today. This also means that, if He held the church in Crete to a high standard like we see in the Book of Titus, He would hold our church to the same standard. If this is what He expected of Christians on the island, then this is what He expects of Christians right here in British Columbia. We can live up to this. It is possible.
Have you ever wondered what God expects to see in His church? Have you ever wondered what His standard is for believers today? He tells us in the Book of Titus. He spells it out for us right here in this letter and, if you would like to learn more about this, come join us this Sunday morning. We start at 9:30. Would you like to see how much God changed the Cretans? Would you like to see the impact that Jesus had on them and the impact He can have on us today? Join us as we talk about that as well. We meet at 46024 Riverside Drive in Chilliwack. Bring your Bible and a heart that wants to learn more about the church. See you there! – Jeremy Cagle
