A famous pastor once asked the question: How many of you remember the Minor Prophets? How many of you remember the Book of Nahum or the Book of Obadiah? How many of you can tell me the theological lessons in Amos or Habakkuk and, yet, how many of you remember Jonah? How many of you can recall what the Lord told him? That is because there is something special about the Book of Jonah. There is something unforgettable about the story of the prophet who was swallowed by a whale.
For one thing, his story is so relatable. We can all identify with what Jonah went through in this book because we have all tried to run away from God. We have all tried to flee from His presence. For another thing, the book is so encouraging. It so comforting to see how God treated this rebellious prophet and forgave him and pursued him in love after all that Jonah did. God was faithful to him even though Jonah was not faithful to God which is what we are talking about this week at Grace Fellowship Church.
Jonah 3:1-2 says:
Now the word of the Lord came to Jonah the second time, saying, “Arise, go to Nineveh the great city and proclaim to it the proclamation which I am going to tell you.” So Jonah arose and went to Nineveh according to the word of the Lord.
The amazing thing about this passage is that it says that the word of the Lord came to Jonah a second time. The Lord forgave him and told Jonah again to go to the people of Nineveh. It has been said that God is not a God of second chances only but a God of a thousand chances or a million chances. He will be faithful to you even though you are not faithful to Him which is what we read about in Jonah 3.
So, if you have ever run away from God, please join us as we study how Jonah did that and the Lord forgave him. If you have ever tried to flee from His presence, join us as we see how Jonah did that and the Lord pursued him in love. He was faithful to Jonah even though Jonah was not faithful to God. If you have ever needed a second chance, please join us as we study how the Lord gave Jonah one of those as well. He showed him that He is not a God of second chances only but He is the God of a thousand chances or a million chances. He will be faithful to you even though you are not faithful to Him. We are going to study that at 9:30 on Sunday morning at 46024 Riverside Drive in Chilliwack. We would love to see you there! - Jeremy Cagle
