Several years ago, I was playing a Bible trivia game with some young people in Tennessee. The man who was calling out the questions was a country farmer with a strong Southern accent which made the game interesting. At one point he asked the question: “Whose brothers pushed him in the well?” But, with his accent, the question came out: “Whose brothers pushed him in the whale?” To which one of the students replied: “JONAH!”
Needless to say, Jonah’s brothers did not push him in the whale. The answer to the question was “JOSEPH.” Joseph’s brothers pushed him in the well but God did have a hand in it. God had something to do with Jonah being thrown overboard from the ship and being swallowed by the whale. He wanted to teach Jonah a lesson and the lesson was simple: Jonah needed to obey. He needed to remember that God is God and Jonah is not. He needed to do what the Lord said and go to Nineveh which is something that we all need to learn today.
We all need to learn obedience. We all need to be reminded that God is God and we are not. We need to obey Him which is what we will be talking about this week at Grace Fellowship. We will be looking at the lessons the Lord teaches us in Jonah 1.
Have you ever wondered who pushed Jonah into the whale? Have you ever wondered who gave him such an unusual punishment? The answer is simple: God did and He did it to teach Jonah a lesson. Jonah needed to obey. He needed to do what God had said. Have you ever wondered why God kept him alive for so long? Have you ever wondered why He did not just let Jonah die in the ocean? He did it to give him a second chance. He did it to show him mercy and, if you would like to learn more about that, we will be studying it this Sunday morning at 46024 Riverside Drive in Chilliwack. We will be learning about God’s mercy when we disobey. Bring your Bibles and join us. We meet at 9:30. – Jeremy Cagle
