John 19:23-42

John 19;23-42

The thief on the cross is one of the most interesting characters in the Bible. Not because we know so much about him but because we know so little. We only read a few short verses about his life but they tell us enough. Luke 23:42 says that, as he died, he said, “Jesus, remember me when You come in Your kingdom!” And Jesus said, “Truly I say to you, today you shall be with Me in paradise” (verse 43).

Notice that Jesus did not tell the man to come down off the cross first and be a good person to go to paradise. He did not tell him to be baptized or take communion or read the Bible first. He did not tell him to donate money to the church. He told him that “today you shall be with Me in paradise.”

Why? Because Jesus is enough to save us. The cross is enough. No matter who you are, no matter what you have done, you can go to heaven today if you believe in Jesus. You do not have to wait. As Charles Spurgeon says, “Whoever you may be, ‘Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and you shall be saved,’ is the message we have to deliver to you . . . This is true of every living man, whatever his age may be.”

Do you believe that today? Do you trust that Jesus is enough to save you? If you do not or you are unsure, please join us this Sunday morning at 9:30 as we study Jesus’ death in the Gospel of John. Come learn how it impacted those around Him, especially the thief on the cross. Would you like to go to heaven today? Would you like to have your sins forgiven? Join us at 46024 Riverside Drive in Chilliwack as we talk about how to do that. We will be studying Jesus’ final hours and His burial in John 19:23-42. Bring your Bibles and an open heart, and we will see you there! – Jeremy Cagle
