1 Timothy 3:8-13
A new deacon once asked his pastor what he should do in his first day in office. He had never served in this role before and he wanted to get off to a good start so he asked the pastor how he should begin. The reply was simple: “You are a deacon now so go deak!”
That might be a little silly but the point is well taken. The office of deacon is not complicated. The Greek word for deacon is diakonos, which means “servant” because that is what a deacon does. He serves the people of God. He helps them any way he can. This week we are going to talk about the kind of man that is qualified in the New Testament to do that.
First Timothy 3:8-13 gives us eight qualifications for the office of deacon, and they range anywhere from how a man manages his household to how he carries himself in the church and in the world. In other words, they set a very high standard for this position because God does that. The Lord has a very high calling for the office of deacon and we should look for men who understand that and live accordingly. We should look for men who are ready to serve the church or “deak” with a high standard.
So please join us this Sunday morning as we talk about that at Grace Fellowship Church. Join us as we look at the high calling of a deacon in First Timothy 3. We meet at 9:30 at 46024 Riverside Drive in Chilliwack. If you are not able to join us, please pray for us as we discuss how to implement this new office into our church. The Bible tells us to have deacons and we want to obey it and create this position soon in our congregation. We covet your support and prayers as we do so. Have a great week and see you on Sunday! - Jeremy Cagle
